His Young Money crew is well represented with Drake on four tracks and Nicki Minaj on one and the production is as slick and clever as ever, making a full recovery after the drabness found on his rap-rock effort, Rebirth.
Human Being barely seems concerned with current affairs either, as grand single “Right Above It” swaggers and struts like a free man cruising through the club (“I been fly for so long/I fell asleep on the f’n plane”), while Weezy’s good luck with the ladies is the topic that drives three killer cuts (the freaky doo wop “With You,” the woozy porno dream “I’m Single,” and the free-association smut number “Popular”). The biggest flaws are run time and an overall layout that just doesn’t flow like his albums, but when sci-fi beats (“shout out to all my moon men”) and sexually transmitted diseases collide on the vicious “Gonorrhea,” it’s obvious these aren't just leftovers. Any effort finished while in prison automatically falls into the “stopgap release” category, but what was originally planned as an EP to mark Weezy’s birthday somehow became a ten-track mini-album, and its quality is just a shade below any given entry in his Carter series. Dwayne Carter’s induction into legend status will just have to wait a tad.Released with less fanfare than you’d expect from the self-proclaimed “greatest rapper alive,” Lil Wayne’s I Am Not a Human Being landed on the streets while the rapper was behind bars. Wayne wittingly diagnoses three patients over minimal sounds surprisingly provided by Swizz Beatz. Wayne assumes the role of a swag surgeon on ∽r. What separates this Carter installment from its predecessors is a heavier focus on artistic direction and varying subject matter. Additionally ∼omfortable misses the mark with its softer vibes and paper thin crooning courtesy of Babyface. But an attempt at extending that magic with Get Money doesnt fair as well though as both Wayne and T-Pain get careless with that wretched auto-tune effect over a jarring Play-N-Skillz backdrop. On the flipside Lollipop serves as a proper first single with its catchy hook and synthy bleeps. still delivers some nasty verses: We are not the same, I am an Alien / like Gonzalez / Young college / Student who done just flipped the game like Houston / Im used ta / Promethazine and two cups / Im screwed up.
Phone Home finds Wayne tapping into his newfound extraterrestrial persona. He not only rides the beat but parallel parks on the track with exceptional delivery. Those looking for Wayne in beast mode can look no further than ∺ Milli. Weezy blacks out over chant driven production provided by Bangladesh. Anchored by a sped up soul sample crooning their shared surnames, Hov implements a bit of Young Moneys signature broken flow to appropriately pass on the torch. Carter. Weezy connects with Jay-Z as both subtly flow over a soundscape full of light keys and airy horns. Wayne makes it clear that his sights are on scoring the Rap album trifecta on ∳ Peat. While you get a couple of hot lines, as an opener it doesnt do much to set the mood for the disc. While the most anticipated disc of the year is another solid addition to the Hollygrove Hot Boys catalog, it falls short of all its titanic expectations. Now with two years since his last studio release, a couple of arrests, concerns of continued abuse of prescription cough syrup, and most recently his disdain for mixtape DJs, Tha Carter III (Cash Money) is finally here. For the last three calendars Lil Wayne has dominated the mixtape circuit and seemingly bodied countless guest appearances on his way to the streets crowning him king.
